How to resize your Architecture images for Optimal Social Media Posts

Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, LinkedIn, and Houzz are all social media sites that Architecture and Interior Design Firms should be utilizing as part of their digital marketing plan. However, each platform has different requirements for optimizing (sizing) the quality of your images you post online. Additionally, each social media platform treats copyright ownership of the posted images differently. Let’s take a look at each of the most popular sites.

Depending on where the image is located on your wall   Facebook has different size requirements.

1    Cover photo is 820 px wide by 360px for computers.

The photo size is 1200 by 628. Any size smaller than 470 by 246 will render as a thumbnail photo.

2) Your profile photo is 170 pixels by 170 pixels. 128×128 for smartphones.

5) Facebook Event Cover photo should sized to 1920px by 1080px.

6) New recommendations for Facebook posts are 1200 pixels square for optimum quality.

7) Facebook job postings should be sized to 1200 by 628 pixels.

8) Videos uploaded to Facebook should have a minimum resolution of 600 by 315 pixels. The maximum size for Facebook is 1080.  The optimum aspect ratio for your videos is 16:9. 4 gigabytes is the largest video size you can upload to Facebook.

1200×628 for all your posts on Linkedin, Facebook, and Twitter. An easier way to correctly size your images is to keep the aspect ratio at 1.9 to 1.0 or multiply the width of your content area by .524 to get the correct height.

9) images with links 1080 by 1080 with a max 25 characters.

10) Text on an image should be limited to no more than 20% of the image size. Any larger and Facebook may limit the reach of your post.

11) Regular photos post to Facebook should be one of these 3 sizes: 720,960, 0r 2048 wide. All images saved as a jpeg with an SRGB color space.

When you post to Facebook all metadata is stripped, copyright info, GPS, camera type and misc info is removed from the image.

Instagram has recently changed their posting requirements. Your images do not need to be square anymore. Below are recommendations from Louise Meyers of  Visual Social Media:

Instagram Profile photo size 110×10 pixels

Instagram photo size should be at least 1080 width for the best quality.

Landscape oriented images look best when sized to 1080 x 566 or 1.91:1 ratio.

For portrait photos a 4:5 ratio or 1080 x 1350 works great.

To improve the quality of the images I post to Instagram I will often post images directly from my computer. You can post to your Instagram account from a desktop or laptop computer by using one of the many 3rd party apps. Uplet, Flume, and Gramblr are just 3 examples of 3rd party apps that allow you to post images from your laptop to Instagram. Recently I discovered an easier way to post to Instagram on your

Mac book pro.

Open Safari on your Apple computer.

Open the develop tab

Click on User-Agent

Select I Phone, IPad Touch, or IPad.

You can now upload high res/ high quality content through your Instagram app. No need for 3rd party apps. I have found with free 3rd party apps you open yourself up to junk you do not want. Be careful when downloading free apps.

According to Linkedin’s image specification page, you may need to crop your cover image: “Your cover image may have to be adjusted to fit the screen which may involve trimming the image horizontally or vertically. We recommend uploading a high-quality image with as little text as possible to ensure an optimal display on all devices and screen sizes. Our accepted image formats for uploads are PNG or JPEG.”

Max file size 8MB and file type must be PNG, JPEG, or GIF.

Suggested Image sizes for your LinkedIn business and personal career page:

    •    LinkedIn profile cover photo: 1584 wide by 396 high. This is exactly 4:1 proportion.

    •    Linked in profile picture: Per LI, upload any size between 400 x 400 pixels and 20,000 x 20,000 px.

    •    LinkedIn blog share posts size 1200 x 628 px.

    •    LinkedIn photo share: 1200 x 1200 square looks best on desktop but gets cropped to horizontal in the mobile feed. The link share size works best.

    •    LinkedIn Company cover photo size: 1536 x 768 pixels

    •    LinkedIn logo size: 300 x 300 square. No more horizontal.

Use a 16:9 aspect ratio for the best quality uploads with a minimum width of 640 pixels

Video thumbnail: 1280 x 720

Channel icon: 800 x 800

Uploaded image files must be under 2MB in size.

Using a larger size for your videos improves the quality of your thumbnail for your video. It is easier to size down an image or video than try to size it up.

Co-founders Adi Tatarko started Houzz as a side project in the midst of their troubled remodeling project.     •    Houzz requires high-resolution images for all of your postings. Your posted size needs to be a minimum of 2400 pixels wide at 300DPI.
